"Modest Materials is an overview of Joe Tilson's career, spanning over seven decades. Ranging from experimental abstractions of the 1950's to bold Pop Art, elaborate wooden reliefs, to his most recent body of work honouring his love for Venice and Tuscany, the exhibition will showcase some of his most iconic works throughout the decades.

A-Z Box of Friends and Family is an exhibition on the second-floor gallery. Inspired by Tilson's 1963 work of the same title.
This collaborative artwork is reimagined 59 years later as an exhibition. The original contributors were asked to exhibit a new work alongside extended family creating an eclectic celebration of an extraordinary life

"Cristea Roberts Gallery is delighted to announce a major exhibition of one of Britain’s most important living artists, Joe Tilson (b. 1928). As a lifelong dedicated and subversive printmaker, Joe Tilson: Breaking the Rules will focus on Tilson’s graphic oeuvre, revealing a continuum in the artist’s preoccupations, inspirations, philosophy, and methods.

Over 45 works dating from 1967 to 2022, including prints made in the 1960s by Tilson, then an exponent of British Pop Art, and new hand-coloured editions, inspired by cultural history, demonstrate how Tilson, now aged 94 years, continues to defy and challenge the rule book of printmaking."

Joe Tilson

A new monograph, providing a definitive account of Joe Tilson's career.

Written by Marco Livingstone, designed by Jake Tilson and published by Lund Humphries.

Joe Tilson RA (b.1928) is one of the great figures in post-war British art and a pivotal artist of the British Pop Art movement during the 1960s. Still working, and still evolving, he has continued to explore many new directions and a great variety of mediums since moving away from his Pop origins. Astonishingly, no general monograph documenting all these phases of Tilson’s prolific production has ever been published. This book remedies this through a series of insightful chapters, exploring each decade of the artist’s career, written by Marco Livingstone, a respected authority on British contemporary art. Featuring a lively and visually rich design, this unique work will guide the reader through the evolution of one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British art.
